How to End a Networking Conversation Tactfully

How to End a Networking Conversation TactfullyHow to End a Networking Conversation Tactfully1Now what?As a job seeker, I hope you know by now your network will be the key to your success in landing your next opportunity. It is all about who you know. The deal is, building relationships is as much of a skill as all the skills youve listed on your resume. One way to develop your networking skills is by knowing how to effectively end a conversation with confidence and grace.Heres what you need to know to end a networking conversation and quickly build your skill as a great networkerNotice the arc.All conversations have what is called an arc. If you notice, all conversations follow a similar pattern.Part 1 The conversation builds, the dialogue is faster than normal, and energy is high between you and the other person.Part 2 The conversation has peaked and plateaued, its still continuing well, but both people are slowing down and energy reduces slightly.Part 3 This is the trailing porti on of the discussion where most points have been made, the dialogue is slowing down, energy reduces again, and spaces between comments is now noticeable.Whats been described, if you think of it visually, is in the shape of an arc, which is why its named what it is. Over the course of every conversation, there can be multiple arcs.Notice the transition. Many conversations will transition into another topic or additional things to contribute to the previous topic. The transition can come from you or the other person. Either way, you know it might be time to end a networking conversation.Test the arc.The skill is observing whether the arc you are finishing will transition into another discussion- perhaps a change of subjects. You are not only testing yourself to see if there are more (or other things) to discuss but to see if the other person has more things to chat about. Its okay to allow the conversation to trail a bit unless you choose to end the conversation deliberately. If you ha vent yet made that decision, its okay to trail a bit but be willing to begin the 3-Step Closing Formula. Most people allow the trail to go on too long, and thats where awkward sets in.3-Step Closing Formula. The best way to end a conversationStep 1 Show appreciationStep 2 Transition and recapStep 3 OfferExample Ive enjoyed meeting you today and hope we can stay connected. I especially value your tips on how to get the most out of this group and the lunch sessions. I plan to attend based on what youve said. Id like to exchange business cards and arrange to meet for coffee soon. Ill contact you this coming week. The end.Smile, shake hands, and walk away. Its that simple. Dont make excuses or apologize for ending the conversation, as none are needed. Everyone on the planet knows all conversations, no matter how good, will end.Practice.You didnt expect me to mention practice, did you? How will you build your skills and the confidence that comes with it if you dont practice? The next time youre ready to attend a networking event, read this again. Then, get out there and practice ending conversations with style and grace. The more you do, the better you will be.Like so many things we do, we think it should all come naturally to us. It would be nice if that were the case, but it doesnt always happen like that. For the rest of us mortals, we need some instruction and practice and then, we can network like a rock starBottom line I want to help you accelerate your career and achieve what you want by connecting you with free instant access to my 4 Building Blocks to Relationships eBook- the backbone to your networking success and fantastic work relationships.Readers, do you have a hard time trying to end a networking conversation? 5 things to know about your coworkers with kids

5 things to know about your coworkers with kids5 things to know about your coworkers with kidsYou mightve attended a baby shower in the break room, or maybe you caught a glimpse of a framed baby picture on your colleagues desk. Either way, you know that some of your coworkers have kids- what you dont realize is how their new home lives might affect them in the workplace.A 2011 survey of women in the workplace revealed thatnearly half of moms felt as thoughtheir colleagues without children would never understand the amount of stress they endure- and thats just the tip of the iceberg. It turns out that theres a lot to know about being a working parent, and learning what its like might make you a better boss and colleague. Here are a few of the things theyd fruchtwein like you to know.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more1. A rescheduled event could turn their calendars upside-downAs mu ch as wed like our schedules set in stone, the unexpected is bound to happen. In those cases, everyone has to adapt. But regularly changing times and locations for meetings can cause lots of stress for parents. An early-morning meeting might mean they have to find someone to drop the kids off at school, while an after-hours session would require the nanny to stick around longer- if she can.The best way to be considerate of your coworkers is to give as much of a heads up as possible when you need to switch the agreed upon schedule. The more time parents have to reconfigure their timetable, the better.2. Parental leave isnt a walk in the parkAs of 2016, 40 percent of families counted the mom as their main or sole breadwinner, while fathers began to take on more parental responsibilities than in days past. Still, the United States workforce faced a staggering, daunting statistic In a study of 41 nations, it wasthe only one that didnt require parental leave. Some companies might provide it anyway, but its typically a short period thats either unpaid or funded at a fraction of the persons regular paycheck.Regardless, coming back from this leave of absence is extremely hard for new parents. Not only did they just work round-the-clock to adjust to life with a newborn, but they also had to learn to leave their baby behind to go to the office- thats tough. Fathers might bedrngnis even take advantage of this time because they feel as though it makes them appear uncommitted to their jobs.To be a good coworker, encourage your expectant employees to take time off, and go easy on them when they come back. There will be plenty of time for them to ease back into their role.3. Pumping isnt a breakYou might slip out of the office for a coffee while your coworkers-slash-mothers take breaks for an entirely different reason. They have to pump, and they need to find somewhere they can do so comfortably.Dont make the mistake of taking a pump break as an actual break, even if the wom an in question has foundways to make pumping at work less stressful. She likely cant eat or relax while performing her routine pump. So, give female employees all the time they need to pump throughout the day so that they feel comfortable and have plenty of nutrition to provide their babies.4. They might band with other parentsYou might notice cliques forming in the office, but not necessarily the wrong kind Once coworkers become parents, they have an in-office ally who can understand their stressors, mishaps, and triumphs. Even though youre a good colleague, you might not be the right person to open up to if you cant relate to their most important responsibility. If youre one of the people in charge, you might see new moms and dads turning to managers who have kids because they, too, can understand the hiccups that come with parenting. Taking a day off to care for a sick child or arriving late thanks to a slow-moving carpool lane will be heard and understood by someone with kids. If a colleague doesnt confide in you or come to you in times of need, behauptung issues could be why.5. Theyre probably working harder than youThis isnt to say that parents are the only ones working their tails off at the office, but youll probably realize that theyre more efficient than those without kids at home. The reason is very similar to why a canceled or rescheduled meeting is such a big deal to moms and dads They have someone depending on them to be home and present at a specified time. Now, you might start to notice that parents keep their heads down, work through lunch and leave as soon as their eight hours are up. Theyre not being rude or over-eager, they just want to have everything done and be home in time for dinner, baths, and bedtime with their kids. Sometimes, all they get is a little more than an hour for all of that. With these five tidbits in mind, you hopefully have a better understanding of your colleagues with kids. This insight will make you a better, more under standing coworker and friend- theres no better reputation to have as a leader. This article originally appeared on Be Leaderly. You might also enjoyNew neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happyStrangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds10 lessons from Benjamin Franklins daily schedule that will double your productivityThe worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs10 habits of mentally strong people

At the Nexus of Robotics and 3D Printing

At the Nexus of Robotics and 3D Printing At the Nexus of Robotics and 3D Printing A Robot In Every HomeDaniela Rus, director of MITs Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL), envisions a world where robots are as common as cell phones and can help people with almost every conceivable task. Her work has run the gamut from developing a robot chef to incorporating robots in the art of dance. One project underway in the CSAIL lab that could put a robot in every home is the development of a ordnungsprinzip using a 3D printer that will let non-experts plan and create miniature, origami-inspired robots from 2D designs in just a few hours.Typically, the process of making robots - from designing and modeling to fabricating and testing - can be slow, tedious and expensive, said Ph.D. student Adriana Schulz, co-lead author of a paper describing the system recently published in the zwischenstaatlich Journal of Robotics Research. The labs work could make it easy for anyone to design and fabricate their own personal robot a way to truly democratize the process of manufacturing useful objects like robots, Rus says. The Interactive Robogami system, as it is called, is a piece of software that enables non-experts to design and build their own customized walking and driving robots. Its end-to-end, which means it takes care of creating print files, software and wiring, allowing users to simply focus on high-level conceptual design, Rus said.An origami-inspired 3D print and fold technique is used to simplify fabrication of the robots. Image MIT CSAILThe system not only makes robots easier to customize but also allows the designer to determine both the robots movement and shape.Existing efforts to develop customizable robots usually separately consider the robots shape and movement, Schulz said. In other words, the robots mechanical structure is considered in isolation from the movement that you want it to do. A key innovation of our system is that we are combini ng geometry and motion, enabling you to design functional objects that are actually physically capable of being fabricated. The design can be created in just a few minutes and 3D printed and assembled in as little as four hours. The system also allows users to simulate the new device before fabrication to make sure the design meets the users specifications.Interactive Robogami uses simulations and interactive feedback with algorithms for design composition so that users can focus on high-level conceptual design. The system has a library of more than 50 different bodies, wheels, legs and other peripherals, as well as a selection of different gaits from which the user can choose, doing for robotics much like what WordPress and others did for website building. The system offers users a library of over 50 different bodies, wheels, legs, and peripherals, as well as a selection of different steps (gaits). Image MIT CSAILThe system uses a 3D-print-and-fold technique, printing the design as f lat and connected at joints, then folding the design into the final shape to become a 3D object. The team tested the system among eight subjects who were given 20 minutes of training and asked to perform two tasks create a mobile, stable car design in just 10 minutes and create a path through an obstacle course that would take a specified robot the least amount of time to travel through.Six robots were fabricated, each taking 10 to 15 minutes to design, three to seven hours to print, and 30 to 90 minutes to assemble. The robots demonstrated a wide range of movement, such as walking on legs, stepping in different sequences, and using legs and wheels simultaneously. The current version of the system works by selecting parts from a database and automatically implements the details required for fabrication. In the future we would like to extend this approach to handle more functionality beyond ground locomotion (such as flight) and to allow the system itself to automatically design robots based on a much more high-level request from the user, Schulz says. For example, another goal is to enable the user to go into the system, define the behavior of the robot in terms of tasks it can perform, and have the system do the rest. This project is exciting because robots are complex systems that normally require years of experience to customize, Rus said. Our tool makes it possible for anyone to design a robot in as little as 15 minutes. For Further Discussion This project is exciting because robots are complex systems that normally require years of experience to customize. Daniela Rus, Director CSAIL

The Power of Evaporation

The Power of Evaporation The Power of Evaporation The Power of EvaporationEvaporation is an overlooked source of alternative energy that, with the right technology, could become more plentiful and reliable than solar or wind power. Researchers at Columbia University are at the forefront of trying to turn this idea into a reality. In 2015, the team of scientists, led by biophysics professor Ozgur Sahin, developed several prototype devices that successfully genesatzd energy from the natural process of verflchtigung. The devices rely on bacterial spores that expand and contract as they absorb and release evaporating moisture. The mechanical energy from this motion is then converted into small amounts of renewable electricity, enough to light up LEDs or power a small toy car.The verflchtigung engine controls humidity with a shutter that opens and closes, prompting bacterial spores to expand and contract. Image Columbia UniversityIn a recent paper in Nature Communications, Sahin estimates that with ideal conditions and scaled-up versions of their technology, evaporation from U.S. lakes and reservoirs could theoretically supply nearly 70 percent of the countrys electricity needs or more than300 gigawatts of power every year. For example, tens of thousands of these interconnected devices could float on top of lakes and reservoirs, using bacterial spores to generate electricity. How the System WorksOne of these spore devicesthe evaporation engineconsists of plastic strips coated with water-absorbing spores from the soil bacteriumB. subtilis. Changes in humidity prompt the bacterial spores to expand and contract. They do this with a lot of strength, says Sahin. When this happens, the strips elongate and shorten in response. Theyre essentially working like a muscle, and that energy can be converted into electricity.Although humidity itself does not tend to change rapidly in the natural environment, there is enough evaporation coming from open-water surfaces to be harnessed by his devices. The way we do this is we put the strips below shutters, says Sahin. When the shutters open up, they can let moisture go through. When these shutters are closed, they block moisture. When multiple spore-coated strips are put together, he notes, the piston-like system can be tied to a generator to produce power. This proof-of-concept experiment is a critical first step. Larger-scale systems will require fewer moving components to maximize implementation. One goal is to make something sheet-like out of the spore material, so these sheets can expand and contract on a surface area, says Sahin. The final material could produce a significant amount of power.Future PossibilitiesIn addition to creating energy, evaporation technology can save water. Sahin estimates that half of the water naturally lost from lakes and reservoirs through evaporation could be saved during the energy-harvesting process. By his calculations, this is about 25 trillion gallons a year, or about one-fif th of the water Americans consume. This would be especially valuable for water-sensitive cities with growing populations, especially in the southwestern US.Another interesting property we realized is that by slowing down evaporation, we can raise the temperature of water, effectively storing energy as heat that can be later released on demand, points out fellow researcher Ahmet-Hamdi Cavusoglu. Depending on the local weather conditions, we could release this stored energy rapidly as additional evaporation to match fluctuations in electrical energy demand. This would be similar to how hydroelectric dams vary their power output by changing the flow rate of water through the dam. There are, however, environmental concerns. Slowing the amount of direct evaporation from a body of water could change water temperatures, negatively impacting aquatic life. Covering parts of a lakes surface with these engines could further reduce water temperatures by blocking sunlight. Less sunlight reduces a lgae levels, which in turn reduces oxygen levels, possibly resulting in fish die-offs.The team is researching how to make better spore-based materials and build larger engine prototypes. No one previously has provided an estimate as to how powerful evaporation could be, says Cavusoglu. We hope our work will provide added motivation for future research and development on this evolving class of materials.Mark Crawford is an independent writer. For Further Discussion We hope our work will provide added motivation for future research and development on this evolving class of materials. Prof. Ahmet-Hamdi Cavusoglu, Columbia University

Community Services - Careers That Make a Difference

Community Services - Careers That Make a Difference Community Services Careers That Make a DifferencePosted October 13, 2011, by Jenny Sakr If you enjoy helping people and want an interesting and varied career, have you considered community services? Choosing to work in a field that gives is a rewarding experience and satisfying not only your career goals but also your social conscience. Community services encompass the provision of physical, social, emotional and community support, and are essential in ensuring the wellbeing and development of all community members from birth to death. Many jobs in the industry are related to the care of the elderly, disabled or mentally ill. An ageing population and a trend towards de-institutionalising care and reducing lengthy hospital stays will make for plenty of opportunities in this growing sector. Aged care The Australian Bureau of Statistics has predicted that the proportion of Australians aged 65 or over will nearly double in the next 50 years. The ageing population has led to unprecedented demand for quality aged care services and a massive boom in employment prospects and job growth in the aged-care industry. Already, across Australia, some one million Australians receive either in-home or residential care from this massively growing and vitally important industry, says former CEO of Aged and Community Care Victoria, Gerard Mansour. The aged care industry is critical to ensuring the mobility, equity, health and welfare of the elderly, with aged care services providing everything from assisting grocery shopping and bathing to full-time, in-house care. And with many government scholarships to entice students into aged care, the opportunities have never been greater. The range of career choices are enormous from nursing, where complex health care needs are met, to allied health professions such as physiotherapy, to personal carers, all the way through to finance, management and executive leadership, says Manso ur. Disability care One in five Australians almost four million people have a disability. While carers of people with disability are usually family members, there is a need for stronger support systems to assist people with disability and their carers. It is important that support services are locally available so that people living with disability have easy access to the support they require in order to live their lives to the best of their potential and do the things most people take for granted, says a spokesperson for Disability Services Australia (DSA). Statistics show that the satz of disability increases with age and this has begun to place increasing pressure on disability services. The Australian government provides a variety of services for people with disability and their carers to help them overcome any barriers they might have. In the past the sector has been resourced by an energetic, dedicated but low-profile workforce. However, with increasing pressure for se rvices, the disability sector is finding it more difficult to fill its vacancies, particularly entry-level positions such as support worker or intern psychologist, says a DSA spokesperson. Mental health Every year one in five Australian adults will be affected by some form of mental disorder, highlighting the importance of accessible mental health community support programs. While some mental health disorders can be overcome or managed with treatment, some people can be severely affected by their mental illness to the point where they are psychiatrically disabled. When someone has experienced mental illness it is often necessary, once they have sufficiently recovered, to re-establish community connections and day-to-day living skills. By being part of the community, mental health services help break down some of the stigmas that surrounds mental illness, says Policy and Research Manager of Psychiatric Disability Services of Victoria (VICSERV), Wendy Smith. As the third leading cau se of disability burden in Australia, mental health is on the national agenda and awareness in the community is increasing, and that bodes well for those working in this growing sector. Make a difference Community services offer a flexible working environment, with the majority of work available being on a part-time or contractual basis. Making a difference to peoples lives and the community, while being rewarding, can also help you develop life-long menschlich skills such as empathy and patience, and help you to understand social and ethical issues that can affect a persons capacity to be involved in the community. One of the most rewarding things about working in mental health is working alongside someone to help them achieve their goals. People affected by mental illness can and do recover, sometimes to lead different lives, and mental health workers get to experience this change and the sense of hope that drives it, says Smith. With opportunities in entry-level positions in corporate areas, there are great opportunities for development and growth. While some roles require no qualifications, studying a certificate III or IV in aged care will give you a good foundation in the required skills and training and help you stand out from the competition. With skills shortages affecting the whole industry and the growing demand, now has never been a better time to jump on board With improved working conditions and wages, the disability services sector has become a real alternative to the public and private sector employment markets. It is attracting job seekers who are looking to see results for their efforts and who want to make a significant contribution to their community, says a DSA spokesperson. Unlike other industries, there are job opportunities in community services across all areas of Australia metropolitan, regional or rural and remote. Not only are the skills you learn in community services important to Australia, but they are transferable and in d emand overseas as well, opening up the opportunity to work anywhere in the world. Wondering how to quit a new job Heres when its okay to quit your new job

Wondering how to quit a new job Heres when its okay to quit your new jobWondering how to quit a new job Heres when its okay to quit your new jobIf youve ever had a no good, horrible first day at your new job, a treasonous thought may start to tempt you - how soon is too soon to quit? In its new report on the subject, The Wall Street Journal uses studies and interviews with early quitters who regret their decision to caution unhappy workers against hasty departures. When its not okay to quit earlyWhen the expectations of the job dont meet the reality, we are likely to feel stress under this uncertain situation. Did we just make a terrible mistake by taking this job? The pressure of this stress can cause us to make unwise, abrupt decisions like quitting a new job on the spot. The Journal cites a 2016 studythat found that people in uncertain, ambiguous situations are more likely to make risky, disadvantageous decisions as a result of stress.Instead of letting the panic of buyers remorse take over, focus on the consequences of quitting early. Is quitting now worth the potential fallout? Your manager invested time and money into hiring you, and you may burn bridges with potential contacts and references that could follow you throughout your career by quitting too soon.So when you start to daydream about making your hasty exit a reality, take a step back and separate the facts of your situation from the bearable annoyances. It isnt wise to exit just because you dont like the person next to you or have to do grunt work all day. If the boss is abrasive, push back a bit, the Journal article cautions. If you dont feel supported by your bosses, dont think that your only solution is to quit. Ask for clarification about your role. Seek out allies in the office and outside of it to advise you.As human resources expert Suzanne Lucas advised an employee wanting to quit after a week at a frustrating job, part of starting a new job is realizing that it is not always going to be p erfect. It will take time to win co-workers over and gain the cultural capital to get your idea heard. Everyone hands over the tasks they like the least and keep the ones they like the most, Lucas wrote. You cant just waltz in and change everything without understanding why they are doing it in the first place. Give yourself some time to learn how things operate and then suggest changes. When it is okay to quit your new jobThere are, of course, situations where quitting your new job is justified. If you discover that your new job involves illegal, unethical, or unsafe activity that puts you in physical danger or legal jeopardy, you should feel free to walk out of your new job with your head held high. There are less illegal offenses that are mucksmuschenstill worthy of early exits. Employees seeking to flee their new jobs often feel like the victims of a bait-and-switch scheme. If the job being advertised in the interview process is completely different from the job you end up doing, that is likely to prompt a justified flight response. The bottom lineRecognize that ultimately, you are the only one who can truly know when a job is no longer bearable. Whether or not you decide to quit hastily or wait and see, be as pleasant as you can be to your employer. If you decide to quit, you shouldnt go into a detailed explanation of why youre quitting so soon after starting a job.Resist the urge to openly badmouth your employer about its company culture and itsshortcomings, because how you talk about one company signals to future employers how you will one day talk about them. However long your time with a company is, you want your last impression of you as an employee to be a good one.

Career as a USAF Space Systems Operator

Career as a USAF Space Systems Operator Career as a USAF Space Systems Operator Do you stare up at the stars like an angsty young (rebooted) Captain Kirk? Sure, becoming a NASA astronaut in the military is a rare opportunity, and maybe your long-term goals don’t otherwise include the officer’s commission, pilot’s wings, or doctoral thesis commonly found on an astronaut’s resume. That doesn’t mean that your goals have to stop at the lower atmosphere. On the enlisted side, the Air Force maintains a cadre of Space Systems Operators that support both military and national goals beyond the clouds. Duties and Responsibilities Space Systems Operators are split up until several functional areas depending on their duty assignment, but all support Air Force space-related missions via console, similar to the work of an air traffic controller. Some may begin their careers detecting and deterring intercontinental missile launches, a space-centric discipline but with a decidedly military focus. Others work with satellite communications: maintaining the Global Positioning Satellite (GPS) system, disrupting enemy satellite communications, or keeping US satellites in their proper orbits and trajectories. Some operators also handle “command and control functions at...agencies such as the Joint Space Operations Center...Missile Warning Center, and NORAD/NORTHCOM Command Center.” (Air Force Credentialing and Education Research Tool.) Then there are range operations overseeing space launches. The manned space program at NASA may be on the backburner, but that’s not stopping the US from launching missiles, satellites, and unmanned vehicles into the great unknown. Airmen in range operations don’t just work with the Air Force, either: According to their Enlisted Classification Manual, they also support “in-flight hardware processing and satellite launch operations for DoD [Department of Defense], NASA, and commercial users.” Military Requirements Space Systems Operators need to meet medical qualifications for space operations, which include normal color vision, hearing, and equilibrium; absence of chronic migraines, epilepsy, or psychological conditions such as claustrophobia; and preclude those with regularly prescribed medications that “affect alertness, judgment, cognition, special sensory function, mood or coordination,” according to the Air Force Instruction on Medical Examinations and Standards. Candidates must also pass a background check with eligibility for at least a Secret-level security clearance. Although not required, high school work in physics, geometry, trigonometry, algebra, and computer science are all considered helpful primers by the authors of the Enlisted Classification Manual. Education Preparation for a career in Space Systems Operations begins at Vandenberg Air Force Base, California, following basic training. All airmen start with Space 100, a month-long primer on the whole space operations career field, covering “launch, missile, warning, and safety.” The course, described by some as more challenging due to its breakneck pace than its content, leaves students ready for follow-on training specific to their first duty assignment. These follow-on courses vary in length and prepare airmen for assignments such as space lift operations, missile detection, and satellites. Certifications Although the Community College of the Air Force (CCAF) Credentialing and Education Research Tool comes up pretty scarce on suggestions (just two professional management certifications), it does advertise CCAF’s optional degree program for Air and Space Operations Technology. Career Outlook Word among self-professed veterans of Space Systems Operations on the Military.com forums is that there’s mobility between different specializationsmissile surveillance, range operations, etc.but that constant retraining is the key to qualifying for new assignments and staying on the cutting edge of Air Force space ops. The variety of duties and mobility between assignments are a positive counterbalance to the fact that, according to these same veteran operators, the work tends to take the form of long shifts windowless rooms (hence the medical standards singling out claustrophobics.) Beyond the Air Force, successful duty in Space Systems Operations has the apparent advantage of your security clearance. Civilian careers that require experience with security, radar, and mission management are prime targets. Unfortunately, America’s switch to a privatized model for manned spaceflight has pained a lot of NASA employees on the “space coast,” according to Payscale.com. This seems like a bad omen, but some of the trouble may stem from: (a) workers who won’t relocate or are facing a late-life career change and (b) the fact that this is (hopefully) just the rocky start of a new stage in the industry. For those with galactic-sized ambitions, the privatization model will hopefully develop new and more jobs in the civilian sector as this industry gets off its feeta prime place to go after starting off as a Space Systems Operator in the Air Force.

JobQuiz: JobQuiz is a career aptitude test that you can do quickly (it only takes about 12 minutes). It gives you the opportunity to evaluate hundreds of career options to get ideas about what your perfect career would be. The site allows you to take all the tests but will not allow you to access your results until you’ve paid a fee. To get the results, the fee is $9.99 or $6.99 for students.   Personality Tests Online personality tests measure your intelligence or aptitude, inventory your skills, and assess your ability to succeed in a career. Some are as simple as selecting colors you like and dont like. With others, youll need to answer a number of specific questions. Personality tests can be useful for showing you what kind of career you might want. They also can show you what skills make you a strong candidate for a job. Once you know your skills, you can highlight them on your resume and cover letters. Some tests are free, while others cost money. Be sure to research the cost of a test before doing it. Some can be done online, while others require a career counselor to interpret them. For example, the Typology Central Jung Personality Test is a free personality test that combines two systems for evaluating personality type- Jungian Cognitive Functions and Personality Dichotomies. After you take the test, youll get a report that outlines your temperament. Myers-Briggs Personality Type Indicator The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator is the most well-known, authoritative personality test available in the psychology and human resources community. It assesses your personality type and explores career options. If youre a college graduate, check to see if your career office offers no-cost testing for alumni. Otherwise, review these options for taking the assessment either online or in-person. This test categorizes people into 1 of 16 personality types. With a series of questions, the test determines whether you gravitate toward extroversion or introversion, sense or intuition, thinking or feeling, and judging or perceiving. Heres a quick guide to understanding the four categories within the Myers-Briggs test: Extroversion (E) or Introversion (I): This is about how you get your energy. Do you turn inward or outward for sources of energy?Sense (S) or Intuition (N): Which one you gravitate toward reveals how you perceive and absorb information. People who get an S result are more likely to use past experience and common sense to evaluate situations, while the intuition-focused readily see the big picture and patterns.Thinking (T) or Feeling (F): With this personality trait, your decision-making style is revealed. Thinkers are guided by logic and common sense, while feelers may rely on values feelings. For feeling types, the decision-making process may be guided by how a decision would affect others. Judging (J) or Perceiving (P): This last piece of the personality type reveals lifestyle preferences, or how you like to live your life. Judging types are organized and comfortable working within rules and framework. You can count on someone of this type having a five-year plan. Perceiving types are more likely to prefer a flexible environment, adapting plans as needed.   Test questions reveal whether you are an ISTP (thats Introversion, Sense, Thinking, Perceiving) an ENFJ (thats Extroversion, Intuition, Feeling, Judging), or one of the 14 other possibilities.   Talent Assessment Tests Talent assessments are used to help an employer identify candidates who will be a good fit for jobs. Talent assessments help predict a new hire’s performance and retention. These tests assess your personality, work style, knowledge, and/or skills. These assessments often are given to job candidates either online or in the company store or office. Large companies like Walmart, Burger King, PetSmart, and others commonly use talent assessment tests. Pre-Employment Tests Talent assessments are only one of many different kinds of pre-employment tests that employers might give job candidates. Employers often use tests as part of a larger selection procedure to screen applicants for hire. Other types of tests that employers might give candidates include personality tests, cognitive tests, emotional intelligence tests, physical exams, drug tests, credit checks, and background checks. There also are tests for specific industries. For example, restaurants often test job candidates to see what they know about the industry. The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator is the most common personality test given by employers to job candidates. Pre-employment tests are legal as long as employers do not use the test results to discriminate on the basis of race, color, sex, national origin, religion, disability, or age. One exception is a lie detector test, which is unreliable and illegal in most employment situations.

7 Things Job Seekers Do That Say, I Dont Care.

7 Things Job Seekers Do That Say, I Dont Care. 7 Things Job Seekers Do That Say, I Dont Care. 6A job search, whether planned or unexpected, is a hard job and one that relies heavily on first impressions. If you have had a difficult time landing an interview, or even a call back, perhaps there are things you do that imply you don’t care. Sometimes little things job seekers do unintentionally can give off a bad impression. Being experienced and skilled, as well as having the desire and willingness to work hard, are only part of the equation when being considered for a job. While you may be an ideal candidate on paper, the way you interact with others and fit within the company culture can be a determining factor for many HR professionals. Through the job search process, you have the ability to make a great impression or one that leaves people wondering if you even care about getting the job. If you are curious about what message you are sending, check out the list of things job seekers do listed below to see if you give people the impression you aren’t invested. In your job search, it seems like you don’t care if… You Wait Too Long to Respond If you receive an email or a voice mail and you don’t return it promptly, it could be giving a bad impression. Try to respond within a few hours, but no longer than a business day. This is one of the things job seekers do unintentionally but it gives off a bad impression. You Rush Through Your Search When you rush through anything, you get complacent and lazy. Be mindful of keywords you use, companies you are interested in, and jobs you are qualified for. If you apply to every open job and have no knowledge of the company or job, you will send the wrong message. You Procrastinate Procrastinating during a job search will produce the results of the effort you have given. If you wait until the last minute to apply for open jobs, send in a resume, set an interview time, or even prepare for the interview, you are limiting your own success by wasting time and being under-prepared. You Miss Deadlines Hiring managers do not look kindly upon job seekers who miss deadlines (or are late to interviews). If your application and resume were due by the first of the month and you didn’t get it in until the third, you are now the candidate who missed the deadline. There is a good chance they may not even look at your documents because several other people met the deadline. You Overlook the Details If the job description required a one-page resume or specific answers to be included in the cover letter and you missed them, you are not catching the attention of the HR department for being a quality candidate. In reality, many hiring managers will simply pass on evaluating you further because you didn’t follow directions. You Dont Know About the Company Before applying to any job, you should research the company, learn about its culture, the team, and anything else you can find. Its very clear when hiring managers read your application if you dont know anything about their company. You Don’t Say Thank You This is one of the simplest acts, and yet many job seekers overlook the all-important “thank you.” A short email after a phone call or interview to express your thanks and continued interest in the position can leave a big impact. Throughout your job search, make sure to be mindful of how you are searching, as well as how you are presenting yourself to potential employers. By maintaining a professional persona in all communications and paying attention to even the tiniest of details, you can greatly improve your chances of being remembered. While everyone is human and can make mistakes, being a lazy job seeker only makes it easier for someone else to get the job you wanted. Sometimes it is the small things that things job seekers do that make or break their chances of getting the job. Readers, what are some other things job seekers do that say, I dont care? Share your ideas with us below!

Yes, its possible to stay fit when you work weird hours

Yes, it's possible to stay fit when you work weird hours Yes, it's possible to stay fit when you work weird hours Regardless of whether you’re a doctor on call, a late-night bartender or a newsdesk journalist who logs on at 6 a.m., you know the struggle of working odd shift hours. Your sleep window doesn’t match up with the rest of your friends, your meal times feel all out of whack and your exercise routine is pretty much nonexistent. We feel you, but we also want to help you adjust that last one there.Yes, it is possible to stay fit when you work weird hours. It might take a little more focus and dedication than a nine-to-fiver needs, but hey, if you want it badly enough, you’ll make it happen. So let’s look outside the confines of the local gym and its crappy hours of operation and find how fitness can become a daily part of your routine again.Outdoor runningIf you work shift hours, it’s likely that some of your off hours fall between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., AKA broad daylight. This window is the optimal time to  nurture that outdoor jogging habit. The best paths won’t be crowded AF, v isibility is at its best for safety purposes and you can reap the  sunny benefits of vitamin D  (so long as you’re  wearing that SPF, too). Try logging your run right after your shift ends. The bout of exercise will help you fall asleep faster when the time comes and remain asleep for longer no matter the time of day.High-intensity interval trainingShift work often means that you don’t have a  ton  of time to spare in your day, so make those workouts as efficient as possible with  high-intensity interval training. A 20-minute HIIT workout can  provide the same benefits  as a traditional 40-minute cardio and strength training routine, and everyone can spare 20 minutes, right? Even if you break it into two 10-minute sessions, that’s definitely better than nothing.Go for a dipIf your shift work requires standing for hours on end, getting off your feet is probably the first thing that comes to mind when you clock out. So follow that intuition straight to the local swimming pool an d get some laps in. The rush of the water across your body will feel both soothing and invigorating, and the workout boosts your cardiovascular health while protecting those joints. You’ll jump out of the pool feeling like a brand new person.Walk, walk, walkThe more you move, the better, and it doesn’t have to be in a traditional workout structure, either. On your breaks, take walks. When stairs are an option, use them instead of an elevator. If your commute can be navigated on foot safely, do so. The more time you spend stepping it out, the less you’ll struggle with the risk factors that come along with a sedentary lifestyle. And that’s certainly a win in our book. This post was originally published on Swirled.com.

7 Career Lessons That Double as Good Life Advice - The Muse

7 Career Lessons That Double as Good Life Advice - The Muse 7 Career Lessons That Double as Good Life Advice Here at The Muse, we talk a lot about careers. (I know, that's stating the obvious.) The thing is, if you really think about it, a lot of the advice we give can be applied to any situation. After all, work and life aren’t all that separate from one another. Many of the lessons you learn from your job can shape your personal life, and vice versa. That’s why we’ve rounded up seven career articles that double as good life advice- because yes, you should love what you do for eight hours of your day, but you should also love the life you live in the rest of those hours. 1. There’s No Such Thing as the “Right” Decision You make tons of decisions each and every day. And feeling like you have a tiny devil on one shoulder and an angel on the other, both weighing in on every major choice and insignificant call- like whether you should order an iced coffee or iced tea- is exhausting. Stop overanalyzing all the small decisions you make in a day and instead lean on how you feel and what you know to be true. You can’t go wrong that way. Read More: Good News for People Who Overanalyze Everything: “Right” Decisions Don’t Exist 2. Clear Communication Is the Key to a Successful Relationship That goes for colleagues and bosses as well as friends, romantic partners, and family members. Miscommunication happens all the time both in the workplace and beyond it. But you can fix that once you start speaking confidently and directly. Read More: 5 Habits of Truly Amazing Communicators 3. Nobody Knows What They’re Doing 100% of the Time No matter how much you stay organized and think ahead, you’ll never be fully prepared for what life throws your way- whether it’s a tricky client or company restructuring, or an apartment flood or parenting issue. Life’s unpredictable and imperfect. There’s no need to have it all figured out- nobody does. Read More: How to Get Over “I Have No Idea What I’m Doing” Syndrome 4. You Don’t Need to Take Everyone’s Advice to Heart Sure, you should be open to feedback. But that doesn’t mean you’re going to agree with all of it- or even that you have to implement it. Everyone’s going to have different advice for how you should manage your team, run a meeting, or where you should take your career. Or, they might weigh in with their opinions about your cleaning habits, hobbies, or relationships. The key is to take that input into consideration and make the call that’s best for you. Read More: Here’s Exactly What to Do When Someone Gives You Feedback You Disagree With 5. Writing Can Help You Out of a Slump If you feel like you’re caught in a career rut- or any rut for that matter- freewriting can help you out of it. It works because there are no expectations for what you write, what you think, or how you feel. It’s about processing your internal monologue on paper so you can get a better handle on where you’re feeling stuck. Read More: How to Freewrite Your Way Out of a Career Slump (Even if You’re Not a Writer) 6. You’re Allowed to Leave Behind Things That Don’t Fulfill You Sometimes certain things look and feel rosier in your imagination than in reality. As you experience new things in your life, you might be surprised to find that your interests lie elsewhere. It’s OK to change course, and it’s OK if you leave behind something that you once valued or loved. Read More: It’s OK if What You Thought Would Make You Happy Didn’t 7. Nothing You Do Is a Waste Lost friendships and relationships aren’t a waste of time. Neither was your last job or your failed side project. In fact, it was probably the stepping stone you needed to get to where you are now. Consider how far you’ve come, instead. You’ve gained so much because of those things you’ve “lost”- remember to focus on that. Read More: 3 Reasons That Job Wasn’t a Waste of Time, Even if Your Current One’s Completely Different Your career and life are more intertwined than you think. So, don't forget to consider all that tried and true career advice when making decisions outside the office, too.

When You Miss a Deadline - Next Steps - The Muse

When You Miss a Deadline - Next Steps - The Muse When You Miss a Deadline - Next Steps It happens to the best of us. Maybe accounting didn’t get you the numbers on time. Maybe the design work you thought would take you four hours is taking more like 14. Maybe Taco Tuesday turned into Food Poisoning Tuesday, and there’s just no way you can drag yourself to the office to finish Wednesday’s client report. In any case, you’re going to miss a deadline, and you know your boss, your customer, or whoever else you owe your work to is not going to be excited. As a writer and an editor, I’ve unfortunately been on both sides of the missed deadline dilemma. And here are a few things I’ve tried and seen that will help you get the extension you need while keeping your relationships intact. Give as Much Advance Notice as Possible There’s nothing more infuriating (not to mention unprofessional) than, “Oops, I missed today’s deadline. Can I turn it in next week?” Obviously, there are exceptions (see: food poisoning), but for the most part, you should try to give as much notice as possible if you think you’re going to be delivering something late. It’s much easier for the other party to plan around you if you say something like, “I’m just digging into the project, and it looks like the data collection is going to take a few days longer than I originally anticipated. Can I extend the deadline from next Friday to the following?” In fact, most people will be perfectly happy to extend a deadline when given a good reason. Well in advance. Explain Yourself- Briefly On that note, it’s always professional to explain why you’re going to be turning something in late. Of course, not all deadlines are created equal- a client deliverable set in stone in a contract is a little different than a progress report you mentioned you’d get to your co-worker “sometime next week”- and a different level of explanation will be required for each. But a good rule of thumb is to succinctly explain why things aren’t going according to plan, without blaming anyone or going on and on about your sick dog, broken computer, or mounting to-do list. A simple outline of the facts (“unfortunately, I’ve run into some snags with the reporting software”) is typically sufficient. That said, you can do yourself a serious favor if you… Give an Option or a Bonus One of my all-time favorite writers also has one of my all-time favorite I’m-going-to-miss-a-deadline strategies: She gives me the option of whether to have her bust her you-know-what to turn it in on time or to give her an extension. Think: “I’m in the middle of a project that’s taking quite a bit longer than expected. Will it screw up your timing if I deliver the draft tomorrow? If so, I’ll crank it out tonight. If not, I’d so appreciate an extension and will have to you tomorrow!” A vast majority of the time, I’m happy to oblige. Similarly, you can always offer to deliver the finished portion of the work. Think: “I can definitely have pages 1-6 of the report to you by tonight- or I can deliver all 10 pages by tomorrow at noon.” If you’re really putting someone in a tough place by missing a deadline, think about what you could offer that would make up for the inconvenience. I’ve had writers offer to send me two articles instead of one to make up for a missed deadline- or if you’re working with a client, you can offer to deliver an add-on to your product or service or a slight reduction in fee. You may be putting someone out once- but if you help him or her out in another way, that’s bound to leave a positive impression. Show Professionalism and Appreciation If you’ve ever been on the receiving end of late work, you know what a pain it is, so make sure you show your appreciation when you’re asking for an extension. No need to wax poetic, but a simple, “I really appreciate you making this exception. It won’t happen again” goes a long way. Also, pick a new deadline and stick to it. People are more apt to keep seeing you as professional and reliable you if they know exactly when they can expect the late work. Instead of a vague, “Can I have an extension?” try, “Could I get the report to you by Tuesday instead? It’ll be in your inbox by 5 PM- hopefully sooner.” And then, you know, make sure it happens. Make Sure It’s Rare Perhaps the best advice of all is to make sure you’re not in the habit of missing deadlines. When my always-reliable writer asks for a one-time extension, I’m more than happy to rearrange things. When people turn things in late on the reg, it gets harder and harder to give them a pass. My favorite tip for making sure you’re always prompt is to set a faux deadline for yourself a day or two before your actual deadline- even put it in your calendar, which tricks your brain into thinking it’s due a few days before. Stick to that date, and you’ll always be safe. Even if you, you know, come down with food poisoning. What tips do you have for asking for a deadline extension?
